Podium: 20 Jahre Unabhängigkeit im Kaukasus

Vor 20 Jahren wurden Georgien, Armenien und Azerbaidschan unabhängig von der Sowjetunion. Aus diesem Anlass hat die Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Autoren aus Georgien, Armenien, Azerbaidschan, Russland, der Türkei, der EU und den USA gebeten, auf diese zwei ereignisreichen Dekaden zurückzublicken und zu erörtern, welche Herausforderungen die kommenden Jahre bringen werden.

Das Ergebnis ist ein Buch, das die verschiedenen Probleme des Kaukasus gründlich analysiert. Die Publikation wurde am 24.11.2011 in Berlin im Rahmen einer Veranstaltung der FES präsentiert. Sascha Götz moderierte die Podiums-Diskussion mit fünf Autoren des Buches. Mitgeschnitten wurde der Originalton in Deutsch und Englisch, der hier vollständig ohne Übersetzung dokumentiert ist.

20 years ago Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan achieved independence from the Soviet Union. On this occasion, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) has asked authors from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkey, EU and the USA to take a look back on two eventful decades and explore the challenges for the coming years. The outcome is a book in which the multilayered problems of the South Caucasus are thoroughly analysed. The book was presented on November 24th 2011 in Berlin. Sascha Götz was the moderator of a panel discussion with five of the authors on this occasion. The discussion in German and English is documented here without translation.

Boris Navasardian (left) is a journalist and analyst with over 30 years of professional experience. Since 1995, he has headed the Yerevan Press Club, one of the leading NGOs in post-Soviet Armenia. Mr. Navasardian has also been a member of the Steering Committee of the Civil Society Forum of the Eastern Partnership since 2009.

Archil Gegeshidze (middle), PhD in Social Geography, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Former chief foreign policy adviser to the President. Currently, Senior Fellow at the Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies (GFSIS).

Arif Yunusov (right) has a Ph.D. in history and is the head of the Department of Confl ict and Migration at the Institute of Peace and Democracy in Azerbaijan. He is also the author of over 250 publications on various aspects of the modern history of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, including six monographs.

Dieter Boden, Dr. Phil. (right) is a retired diplomat with long years of experience in Russia, Eastern Europe and Caucasus. As a fi nal station, he was in charge of the German representation at the OSCE in Vienna as an ambassador from 2002 to 2005. Before that he was at the helm of the OSCE mission in Georgia (1995/96), and acted as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Georgia and head of the UNOMIG mission (1999 to 2002). At the end of 2007/beginning of 2008, he was in charge of the OSCE/ODIHR mission to observe the presidential elections in Georgia.

Uwe Halbach (second right) deals with the developments in the North and South Caucasus, the Caspian region and Central Asia as an academic staff member of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin in the Russian Federation/CIS research division. Focus of the studies: post-Soviet state and nationbuilding, regional confl icts, Islam in the post-Soviet space.
